ARTSblock

The Home of the Arts in Riverside

ARTSblock is a collaborative effort between the city of Riverside and UCR, and contributing to the revitalization of the downtown area and bringing exciting art exhibits and events to Riverside and Inland Southern California.

Three Spaces / One Place

UCR ARTSblock is composed of the UCR/California Museum of Photography, the Sweeney Art Gallery and, coming in 2010, the Culver Center of the Arts. The three venues reside side-by-side on the pedestrian mall in the heart of downtown Riverside.

The California Museum of Photography (CMP)

The UCR/CMP contains a priceless collection of photographs and cameras, including the 350,000-image Keystone-Mast Collection of stereograph images, viewed with a binocular-like device that was as much at home in family parlors between 1870 and 1940 as a television set is today. Recognized as the most extensive museum of its kind west of the Mississippi River, UCR/CMP is located on Riverside's downtown pedestrian mall.

 The Sweeney Art Gallery

The Sweeney Art Gallery presents a wide range of aesthetic experience and artistic exploration, including painting, photography, installation and digital arts. The Gallery holds a dozen professional exhibits a year, with frequent participation by faculty, and an Annual Senior Art Theses Exhibition. Two new displays are a Permanent Collection Gallery and the Gluck-sponsored e-Gallery, an interactive on-line gallery.

The Culver Center of the Arts

Scheduled to open in 2010, the Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts will be an interactive arts facility, housed in the newly-renovated historical Rouse building. It will include exhibition and retail space, a film and video screening room, graduate and faculty offices, as well as living accommodations and work space for visiting artists. It will also provide ongoing arts activities serving both the campus and the community.
