About Dean Stephen Cullenberg

Economist Stephen Cullenberg has been the dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences since July 2006.

Cullenberg's scholarship crosses boundaries, showing relationships between economic theory and sociology, philosophy, English and even dance history and theory.

A 1998 recipient of the campus' Distinguished Teaching Award, Cullenberg's student evaluations describe his understated wit and his intellectual prowess.

His priorities include helping UCR attain membership in the Association of American Universities (AAU); connecting the arts communities on campus to downtown Riverside, Los Angeles and the Coachella Valley; and encouraging programs to guarantee student success. His successful initiatives include the recruitment of several nationally known senior professors and the establishment of a presence in the study of the Middle East.

Cullenberg earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1988 after teaching for two years at Smith College in Northhampton, MA. He has served as chair of the Department of Economics and has been active in the Academic Senate, at the campus and system wide levels. He was a member of the committee on Planning and Budget and the Editorial Committee of the University of California Press. He has written several books and numerous scholarly articles on topics of political economy, globalization, development and transition in India, as well as postmodern economics.
