Academic Personnel

Leaves of Absence

Leave Policies and Procedures

According to the Academic Personnel Manual, faculty at the University of California are required to have a "significant presence on campus."

APM 05 -- The Senate assumes that each of its members is devoting all his time and energies (his full "working" time) to the University. Such service to the University includes varied types of activities, such as classroom teaching, conference with students, studying and writing, research, committee work, administration, and public service. Members of the Senate who are not engaged in certain of these activities will naturally have more time for others.

APM 25 (Proposed) -- A faculty member is obligated to have a significant presence on campus, to meet classes, to keep office hours, to hold examinations as scheduled, to be accessible to students and staff, to be available to interact with University colleagues, and to share service responsibilities throughout every quarter or semester of active duty

Any absence from campus for more than seven calendar days requires an approved leave of absence. Faculty should give as much advance notice as possible whenever they must take a leave of absence.

Approval Authority: Sabbatical leaves (Dean); all other leaves (EVC).

Payroll Periods: Leaves for fall quarter affect the payroll beginning July 1st and ending October 31st. Leaves for winter quarter affect the payroll from November 1st through February 28/29th. Leaves for spring quarter affect the payroll from March 1st through June 30th. For example, a 67% sabbatical for fall quarter would mean a reduction in salary effective July 1st (reflected in the August 1st paycheck).
