The College of Art, Humanities, and Social Sciences presents the 2017-2018 CHASS Faculty Civic Engagement Award to Professor of Psychology Carolyn Murray

Dr. Murray’s record of service perfectly exemplifies the spirit of this award. She has served the community in countless ways during her time at UCR, but perhaps her most admirable and significant contribution is the University STEM Academy, which Dr. Murry founded and for which she now serves as the director. The STEM Academy is a rigorous math, science, engineering, and technology educational program for 6thto 9thgraders and their parents, and it targets youth who are underrepresented in STEM fields. Dr. Murray’s service through the STEM Academy has been truly exceptional and extraordinarily impactful for the more than 70 students who have attended this intensive training program.

Numerous students and community leaders submitted letters of support for Dr. Murray’s nomination, and their comments confirm her deep commitment to service and civic engagement. As a small sample of these remarks:

“[Dr. Murray] has demonstrated excellence in opening doors to the community and the university to inspire and foster growth within each and every person she has touched.”

“Because of Dr. Murray’s STEM Academy…our youth in the Inland Empire will have the confidence to excel in any field of their choosing and become active leaders in their communities.”

“Dr. Murray has earned the admiration and respect of the Riverside community.”

“Through [Dr. Murray’s] hard work, she has given our youth hope and understanding that our circumstance does not determine our future.”

“Dr. Murray has served the Riverside community in ways that speak to the best of our humanity and her exemplary service has greatly impacted the lives of young adults, youth and children in this area. Due to her persistence and commitment, the enormous challenges facing the youth in this area have been made easier for them and their families to navigate.”

Beyond her exemplary work with students in her STEM Academy, Dr. Murray organizes a free lecture series on campus addressing topics of interest to the Black community, serves as a member of the Riverside County Office of Education African American Achievement stakeholder committee, volunteers with the Cultural Competency Program African-American Family Wellness Advisory Group, and is an active member of the Riverside Branch of the NAACP, among numerous other service positions.

In sum, Dr. Murray is a model of civic engagement. She tirelessly fights to improve conditions for her community and is an inspiration to all those who have the opportunity to join with her in her efforts.
