Duo "Hermes' Invention"
with Jürgen Hübscher and Tobias Schmitz

Renowned musicians from Switzerland play a wide variety of plucked_string instruments in presenting a repertoire spanning the Renaissance and Baroque periods in Western music as well as various world-music traditions, including Mexico and Peru. Their lively and tuneful renditions have won them acclaim from critics and the public alike on four continents.

Jürgen and Tobias can be seen and heard performing with La Volta on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmJBU6Uk_7g.

Jürgen Hübscher is one of Europe's leading lutenists. He has performed as a soloist and concertized with Concentus Musicus and a variety of other ensembles throughout Europe, the US, Africa, and South America. He has recorded for Harmonia Mundi, Teldec, DGG, and CPO, among other labels. He taught lute and early music for fifteen years at the State Music Conservatory in Karlsruhe, Germany, and is currently on the faculty of the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He continues to give master classes in Europe and the US. He established the youth ensemble La Volta in 1984, which has given concerts around the world.

Tobias Schmitz is a prodigy who joined La Volta at age nine. Now fifteen, he recently won a music competition in Switzerland for instrumentalists in all categories. With his six-course Baroque mandolin he gave spirited interpretations of Baroque music and prevailed over fifty competitors. He also plays a variety of guitars as well as percussion instruments.

Refreshments will be served.
