Description:
Scoring Sentimentality and Sorrow in Some Recent American Film and Television Music
Prof. Scott Murphy, associate professor of music theory at the University of Kansas.
At least twenty popular American films and one television program over the past twenty-five years distinctively associate an atypical but relatively simple triadic harmonic progression with overt sentimentality, often in the form of sorrow, such as that expressed during a funeral scene. A preliminary study of the structure of the progression, and its role in the harmonic syntax of classical and popular music, suggests a number of hypotheses for why this association exists in contemporary film and television and why it works so well. The presentation will make available to attendees transcriptions of hundreds of measures of contemporary musical scores.
