UCR Orchestra Family Concert
Shakespeare's The Tempest
Conducted by Ruth Charloff, with guest artist Johanna McKay, actor/storyteller

UCR Department of Music is pleased to present a free concert for families, performed by the UCR Orchestra and storyteller/actor Johanna McKay.  The magic of Shakespeare's The Tempest comes alive in a vivid retelling for a family audience, with Jean Sibelius's marvelous 1925 orchestral music composed especially to illustrate the Tempest characters and story.  The concert will be performed in the 500-seat University Theatre on the UCR campus.

Special guest artist Johanna McKay is an accomplished actor, director, and playwright, and a teacher of acting and improvisation for both adults and children.  Her acting credits include work at Steppenwolf, The Goodman, Dallas Theatre Center, San Jose Repertory Theatre, and the Hollywood Bowl; her film/TV credits include Grey’s Anatomy, Malcolm in the Middle, The Naked Trucker Show, Mr. 3000, The Babe, and The Bernie Mac Show.  For sixteen years she has directed at The Idyllwild Arts Summer Program, which has included adapting and directing eleven Shakespeare plays for children's productions.  Ms. McKay also works for P.S. Arts, a non-profit group which integrates the arts into underfunded public schools in Los Angeles and Lawndale.

Ruth Charloff is conductor of the UCR Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Singers, and is associate conductor of the Claremont Symphony Orchestra. She has conducted the UCR Orchestra's well-loved series of children's concerts, made possible by a generous donation from Dr. Esther Hays.  As a Gluck Fellow of the Arts, Dr. Charloff and players from the UCR Orchestra have brought the educational program “Orchestral Expeditions” to many elementary schools in the local area.
