CHASS Interdisciplinary South
Symposium Room 1113

This talk will examine the history of performance art in Southeast Asia with a special emphasis on the ways in which artists have connected with one another through live workshops and time based art events that have taken place in various cities in Southeast Asia from Bangkok and Chiang Mai to Singapore and Hanoi. Performance events have in a sense acted as modes of exchange and communication between different communities across the region and provided opportunities for artists to appear in person in front of diverse audiences. Taking the example of Vietnam, I will also examine how 21st century artists are looking to pre-colonial modes of expression for inspiration and finding ways to connect with their Southeast Asian neighbors. Although performance art in the West is seen as an avant-garde practice that rejects conventional aesthetics, in Southeast Asia, artists have been using performance as, what Grant Kester may consider, a dialogic art form, one that invited collaboration and creates conversations.
