Under the artistic direction of Associate Professor Joel Smith, UCR is Dancing makes its highly anticipated return to the University Theatre this March with original choreography by 15 undergraduate dance majors. This production is the culmination of five quarters worth of rigorous study in composition and critical studies courses offered within the Dance undergraduate curriculum. Utilizing various compositional tools including partnering through physical contact, rhythm, use of space, time, energy, and abstract movement vocabularies, and the blurring of bodies and landscape, the concert reflects each students’ unique movement style and choreographic methodology. As a collective of experimental choreographers seeking to explore the phenomena of the human body, the concert provokes questions about translation and power as it relates to language, energy, collective action, gender, and cultural and social identity.
