Workshop with Hirotaka Inuzuka

Experience and Learn the Kecak (monkey chant) from Bali!
What makes the Kecak special is that the accompanying music is provided by the human voice. Hundreds of voices come together in overlapping rhythms.

Hirotaka Inuzuka is a performing musician and instructor. He studied Indonesian music and dance at California Institute of the Arts under the mentorship of I Nyoman Wenten where he earned his Masters of Fine Arts in World Music Performance. He continues to travel to Bali in order to expand his expertise and study with Bali's renowned artists and teachers. Currently he is a prominent member of numerous gamelan groups in the greater Los Angeles area, such as Burat Wangi, Pandan Arum, and Bhuwana Kumala. He has performed extensively in the United States, Japan, and Bali, participating in events such as Pesta Kesenian Bali (Bali Arts Festival), Bali Mandara Mahalango, and Performing Indonesia at the Smithsonian Institute. He has taught and given workshops at universities, colleges, and local non-profit institutions. After his extensive research trip to Bali in 2014, Hiro established Sekaa Gambuh Los Angeles, a group dedicated to play and preserve the music of Gambuh dance drama, an oldest surviving Balinese dance form that is facing extinction due to Bali's modernization. In the same year he started another group, Sanggar Tujunga, a community ensemble in Tujunga CA that provides opportunities for local members to learn Balinese gamelan at various levels.

Free and open to the campus.
