PROGRAM

Magnificat in D, BWV 243    J.S. Bach (1685-1750)
Cantata in 12 movements SSATB soli and coro

The festive Magnificat was Bach’s first major work in his new position as Kapellmeister and Kantor at St. Thomas’s School, Leipzig and was composed for the 1723 Christmas Vespers. Bach revised the canticle for the Feast of the Visitation of Mary (July, 1728) transposing it from the original key of E flat major to the brighter key of D major, replacing the recorders with “modern” transverse flutes. The D major orchestration of the 12-movement work movement included 5 vocal soloists, 5-part chorus, 3 trumpets, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 bassoons, strings, organ and timpani.

Messiah, Hallelujah Chorus, HWV 56     George Friedrich Händel  (1685-1759)
Hallelujah! Arranged by Mervyn Warren, Michael O. Jackson, and Mark Kibble

This particular arrangement was performed at the 1993 Grammy Awards, where the album Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration won the award for best Contemporary Soul-Gospel Album and went on to win the 1993 Dove Award for Contemporary Gospel Album of the year.
