Disabling the dance studio:
An open conversation about dance training and accessibility
Hosted by Joel Smith in the Dance Pedagogy class

London-based artist Catherine intervenes into audience/performer relationships, drawing attention to the role of spectatorship in identity. She has a unique physical structure causing chronic pain, and she does not have a left arm. Despite her body being broadly configured as ‘unable’ to dance, she explores experimental training to manage her pain. Long spent over four years adapting movement that’s challenging for her body in order to interrogate the suppositions of “integrated” dance, in which a range of differently abled performers share the stage. Her recent work critiques how disability art is positioned relative to ‘mainstream’ art. She has been funded by Arts Council of England, Artsadmin, The Wellcome Trust, and The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and performs nationally and internationally, including a the Tate Modern and Tate Liverpool, UCLA, UC Berkeley, The Kennedy Centre Washington DC, ICA Boston and Abrons Arts Centre NYC.
