The CHASS Dean agrees to a flexible plan of meeting classroom teaching obligations as a trial program for two years, at the end of which the program will be re-evaluated. The 4.5 teaching load per year is not changed but faculty may, under certain circumstances, fulfill their classroom teaching obligations over two as opposed to three quarters.
Faculty must apply for the non-classroom teaching quarter.
Only those faculty will be eligible to apply who can document that the number of undergraduate students they have taught or are scheduled to teach (based on past enrollments) during the six quarters prior to the non-classroom teaching quarter meets or exceeds the undergraduate class enrollment average for their respective departments.
Faculty must agree in writing to remain in residence on campus during the non-classroom teaching quarter. Being in residence means:
Fulfilling all service obligations including presence at departmental meetings and participation in Senate and other campus committees
Fulfilling all obligations to students, both graduate and undergraduate including all independent studies as well as masters, qualifying and dissertation committee work.
Faculty must complete at least three quarters of classroom teaching after each quarter of non-classroom teaching before applying for another quarter of non-classroom teaching.
Failure to comply with the conditions of a non-classroom teaching quarter will result in a denial of future requests.
Chairs will be responsible for scheduling non-classroom teaching quarters but must insure that one third or more of their faculty is teaching each quarter.
