By Stephanie Wejbe, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

On Saturday, October 4, the Singh Twins debuted their international exhibition, “PAST MODERN: The Singh Twins” at the Sweeney Art Gallery. The opening celebration began with a lecture by the Twins at the Sweeney Art Gallery, followed by a reception at the Riverside Art Museum. Both venues will jointly present the exhibition, which will run from October 2 through December 6, 2003.

Saturday’s opening showcased nearly sixty of the Twins’ original paintings and highlighted the recent SPORTLIGHT series, which features a satirical perspective on a dozen or so paintings featuring images and examining the relationship between sports, media, celebrity and identity. Its central figures include the Williams sisters, Mike Tyson, David Beckham and his wife, Posh Spice.

The West Coast premiere exhibit reception included distinguished guests and sponsors. Merrill Lynch serves as the major sponsor of the exhibit and the reception included representatives Joyti Chopra, Multicultural and Diversified Business Development for Merrill Lynch and Roopam Runyon, Senior Financial Advisor in the Orange County Merrill Lynch office. Also featured at the reception was Ron Loveridge, Mayor of Riverside and Patricia O’Brien, Dean of College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS), Dr. Harkeerat and Deepta Dhillon, Board of Trustees member; Amy Smith, Assistant Dean for Development of CHASS, and Karen Rapp, Director of the Sweeney Gallery. Other sponsors of the exhibit include Burgess Moving and Storage, Dalip Singh Sethi, Blanchard Signs, and the Press Enterprise.

The Sweeney Art Gallery, an exhibition facility in CHASS, presents a wide range of aesthetic experiences and artistic exploration, including painting, photography, installation and digital arts. The Singh Twins exhibit serves as one of the gallery’s yearly professional displays and is open to the public.
