CHASS Vision of Growth Becomes Foundation for Excellence
By Stephanie Wejbe, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

CHASS continues to grow as an institution not only through changes in student enrollment, academic programs and facilities, but as a place, which recruits an increasingly diverse faculty of excellence. CHASS houses 19 departments, 17 graduate programs, over 55 majors and 44 minors, distinguished research centers, 308 faculty positions, and over 9,000 students. This year, twenty new faculty members have joined the college contributing a broad array of interests, representing significant diversity on the campus. Since 1999, diversity has accounted for over 36% of faculty appointments.

In addition, 36 new faculty are expected to join the College in Fall 2004, both at the junior and senior level, making it the largest faculty recruitment in CHASS history. The College provides innovative teaching and student advising by the College’s faculty, ensuring that graduates are prepared for their academic and professional futures. The new members are expected to contribute to the fields of Anthropology, Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages, Creative Writing, Economics, English, Ethnic Studies, Hispanic Studies, History, Music, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, Sociology, Theatre, Women’s Studies, and also to Interdepartmental programs of Arts Management, Film and Visual Culture, Buddhist Studies, and Native American Sovereignty.

For the 2002-2003 academic year, CHASS accounted for 52% of UCR’s undergraduate conferred degrees, totaling 1413 graduates from UCR’s total conferred degrees of 2789 students. Including Business Administration, CHASS total conferred degrees for the 2002-2003 academic year was 75% of UCR’s total undergraduate population. CHASS also houses the majority of academic programs and facilities available for UCR’s undergraduate students.
