Richard Chabrán to receive NACCS Scholar Award Honor
By Stephanie Wejbe, student intern of CHASS College Computing

UCR’s Richard Chabrán was selected as one of the two recipients for the National Association for Chicano and Chicano Studies (NACCS) Scholar award for 2003, where he and UC Santa Cruz’s Professor Patricia Zavella will be honored at the award’s ceremony at the Millenium Biltmore Hotel this upcoming April. Since the establishment of the award in 1980, the association has awarded the recognition those who have made lifetime contributions in the field of Chicano/a studies and in community development.

Chabrán arrived at UCR in 1994. Throughout his career, he has served as a scholar, instructor, and activist. Chabrán attended UC Berkeley where he obtained his master’s degree in library and information studies in 1975. He has taught courses at UC Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan State University, the University of La Verne, and at Pitzer College.

Currently, Chabrán is the Director of Communications for Virtual Research at UCR. He is the founder of the Chicano Periodical Index, now the Chicano Database, and has made contributions to two major Chicano library collections in the UC System--UC Berkeley and UCLA. The development of the Chicano/Latino Net (CLNet) created in 1993 has propelled itself to becoming recognized as one of the major Latino resources to be featured on the Internet. At the forefront of his research applications, Governor Gray Davis selected Community Digital Initiative (CDI), for California's Technology and Innovation Award, which provides computer access to youth. Other honors he has received include the UCLA Latino Alumni Association’s Padrino Award and the first 21st Century Librarian by Syracuse University's School of Information Studies.
