By Ferda Mehmet, student intern of CHASS College Computing

Henry Cisneros, formerly Secretary of Housing Urban Development, discusses sustainability and community in the 21st century.
On February 20th and 21st, a conference for the proposed Center for Sustainable Development took place at UCR. The conference informed people about policy issues in inland Southern California, ecological sustainability in suburban development, sprawl in the region, California growth experiences that Inland Southern California can learn from, and the challenge of economic development in the region.

The conference brought together people from all around who shared a common interest and passion for suburban development. Of the thirty-two speakers at the conference, CHASS faculty included Scott Coltrane, Gary Dymski, Joel Martin, Max Neiman, and Carlos Velez-Ibanez. Other speakers came from institutions such as California State University San Bernardino, the Public Policy Institute of California in San Francisco, the California Center for Regional Leadership, American CityVista in San Antonio, the University of Southern California, UC San Diego, Rutgers University, Loyola Marymount University, UC Berkeley, University of Minnesota, UCLA, Ameregis, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Southern California Association of Governments, the University of Massachusetts, the Endangered Habitats League, the Kennedy School of Government, and the Great Valley Center.
