UCR Marvels for the Mosaic
By Ferda Mehmet, student intern of CHASS College Computing
The
Mosaic is a collection of art, poetry, non-fiction,
and fiction stories. It has been a tradition at
UCR since 1959, when a group of students interested
in writing joined together and spent time compiling
a booklet of creative works. Today, the Mosaic has
its own staff of UCR students who volunteer to gather
and rate submissions eligible to be in the annual
Mosaic.
The Mosaic staff consists of roughly 20 people, with staff in the areas of art, poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. There is also a layout and web staff, an editor and editor-in-chief, and a historian who does the archives for the website. Each week, the different genres meet together and score the submissions. The positions of staff are open to any UCR student who has an interest in creative writing or art. Regardless of being a UCR student, everyone is welcome to submit work. The highest scored works receive the opportunity to be a part of the Mosaic. This usually consists of 20 poems, 5 fiction stories, 5 non-fiction stories, and about a dozen art pieces. Many of the submissions reflect issues happening in the world, as well as personal subject matter. On Thursday May 22nd from 6-9pm, the 2nd Annual Print Party and Reading took place in Humanities 1500. The turnout comprised of roughly sixty attendants that were made up of students, faculty, parents, children, contributors to the Mosaic and friends, as well as people from various departments on campus. Dipping carrots in dip, the audience listened to the engaging poems and stories. The Mosaic has recently launched the debut of its new website, which intends to reach a broader audience as well as reflect a sense of longevity in the long tradition of the Mosaic at UCR. Senior in Creative Writing, Jessica Wilson, and head of the Mosaic website calls the site a “writer’s resource that exhibits present work, guidelines, and support.” The website plans to include message boards, as well as enclose every published Mosaic since the first booklet in 1959 posted for anyone to browse through and read. The 2003 Mosaic can be bought in the Mosaic Office, HMNSS 2613, for $5, and will be posted on the site by mid-June. This unique site, purely made by students, can be found by visiting the website at mosaic.ucr.edu. |
