Over the past five years, Professor Wong has been conducting Japanese American Drumming (“Taiko”) workshop courses (HNPG 10A-B) for the University Honor’s Program Colloquium series. Nearly fifty students attended one of her workshops this past April. Wong also teaches a UHP freshman seminar (HNPG 31M) titled “Music in Everyday Life” and has advised several senior honors’ theses.

When asked about being selected UHP Professor of the Year, Professor Wong stated that she is “very touched and honored” by the student recognition. In the future, Wong plans on staying involved with the UHP stating, “UHP is a vital part of campus life.”

Professor Deborah Wong is currently a Professor in the Music Department. She received her BA in Anthropology and Music from the University of Pennsylvania and her MA and PhD in Ethnomusicology and Musicology from the University of Michigan. She specializes in Music from Thailand and other South and Southeast Asian countries. Wong has also received numerous awards in her field, and received several grants including the UC Pacific Rim Research Grant. She has taught here at UCR for 8 years.
