Assistant Professor Honored with Arts Award

By Robert Bastone, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Professor Rickerby Hinds, Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts, is being honored for his contributions to the arts by the Riverside Arts Council. The honor is being presented as part of the Monthly Arts Honoree Program which recognizes individuals and organizations that “exhibit artistic excellence” and “service to the community.”

Professor Hinds will be honored for involvement in the local Riverside community, as well as for his talent in reaching disenfranchised populations. His involvement in the community includes facilitation of the Riverside Art Council’s “Hip Hop Theatre Camp,” held at the Bobby Bonds Sports Complex. Professor Hinds also performed his original production Dickens, Douglas and Hope, at the Riverside Art Museum’s Hip Hop Theatre Festival, held this past April.

The honor is presented jointly by the Riverside Arts Council, the Riverside Cultural Trust, and the City of Riverside. The award will be presented to Hinds at a ceremony on May 17 in a presentation in the Riverside City Council Chambers.

Professor Hinds received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from UCR and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Playwriting for UCLA. He has taught playwriting at several universities including the University of Cincinnati and California State University, Los Angeles. Hinds has also written several award-winning plays and has served as the Playwright-in-Residence for both the Shakespeare Festival LA and the Bay Area Playwrights Festival. In addition to his work as a playwright, Hinds has published an article about Hip Hop in Callboard Magazine and directed his play Straight From Tha Underground (1998).
