New California Museum of Photography Director

By Elizabeth Romero, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Colin Westerbeck, who was a curator of photography at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1986 until 2003, has been appointed the new director for UCR’s California Museum of Photography (CMP). The goal CMP has set for its photographic exhibition program is to reach the public as well as UCR’s academic community—to bring “the most challenging art to the widest possible audience,” as CMP’s website states.

Westerbeck succeeded past director Jonathan Green, who is now Executive Director of UCR/ ARTSblock, on September 15.  Since moving to Los Angeles in 2003, Westerbeck has taught photographic history at UCLA and USC in addition to writing the “Photo Synthesis” column for the Los Angeles Times Sunday Magazine in 2006 and 2007.

"My goal," Westerbeck said, "is to build the collection and to do exhibitions in such a way that, whether of contemporary or historical photography, they will address current issues of importance to the social and artistic culture of southern California."

Though he has only been on the job one month, his first exhibition, In the Paths of Righteousness, opens next week and addresses the sort of current issues he has mentioned.  It is a study by LA photographer Jona Frank of the students at Patrick Henry College, an evangelical Christian school founded in 2000 by the man who led the campaign to legalize home-schooling.
