Jewish Studies Endowment

Vision
An endowed chair in Jewish Studies would illuminate Judaism’s rich history and its role as a living religion in today’s world. Using a multidisciplinary approach and with a broadly humanistic emphasis, the program will advance scholarly research and enable the professor who holds the chair to teach our widely diverse students the rich Jewish cultural influence in our society and in the world, including ritual language, history, art and entertainment, politics, and teachings of modern Jewish thinkers.

What is an Endowed Chair?
An endowed chair is a mark of distinction in universities across this nation, and an opportunity to give a gift that will last in perpetuity. Your gift provides the means to engage world-renowned faculty in studies that shape and transform the lives of students and the community. Because the endowment creates a fund in perpetuity, the Chair becomes associated with a permanent area of study at the university and an honored part of its history.

Support on Campus
UC Riverside’s growing and extremely active Hillel organization, which serves the social and religious needs of UC Riverside’s Jewish student population, would complement this program. Academic areas such as Philosophy, History, Theatre, Comparative Literature, and English would also support this endeavor on our campus.

Patricia O’Brien, Dean of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences is committed to the establishment of a Chair in Jewish Studies and is prepared to allocate a state supported faculty position worth $ 2.5 million if it can be enhanced by a privately raised endowment of at least $500,000.

Make a CHASS Donation!
The optimum level for a fully endowed chair at all University of California campuses is $1,000,000, but an initial endowment of $500,000 would establish the endowed chair and create a naming opportunity in perpetuity. Your contribution would enrich UCR and the community immeasurably.
