New History Chair Sharon Salinger Steps Down as Associate Dean for Student Academic Affairs

By Stephanie Wejbe, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Sharon SalingerFormer Associate Dean for Student Academic Affairs, Sharon Salinger, recently rejoined the History Department to assume duties as the new department Chair and Director of Liberal Studies Interdisciplinary programs. Salinger has been with UCR since 1980 and served as Associate Dean for what she calls a "rewarding seven and a half years."

In Salinger's tenure with Student Academic Affairs she and her fellow staff led the Student Academic Affairs Office in developing original campus programs including workshops for students with academic difficulties and one of the newest programs CHASS Connect. In addition, Salinger was also responsible for the innovative transition in which students were allowed to complete functions on-line, which has greatly simplified the lives of students. Academic Advisor, Dorine Ramos, noted Salinger's integral role in the on-line, self-guided tour for students.

Salinger considers one of her career highlights was having the opportunity to work with superb staff. She focused on the staff's commitment to the student-directed office. Ramos explained how Salinger's leadership impacted the office by emphasizing how she was always trying to service the students by examining the effects and benefits of programs. Ramos added "She also took into consideration our feelings as staff."

Salinger discussed what influenced her academic and professional change from Associate Dean to Chair of the History Department stating, "I was ready for new challenges. History is one of the biggest departments within the College with superb faculty and an exciting future which I wanted to be a part of." Salinger's future plans include reintegrating back into the history department. Personally, she will also focus on research and writing.

Academic Advisor Barbara Wotherspoon will miss Salinger's qualities of creativity, intellectualness, energy, and humor in Student Academic Affairs commenting "She is truly irreplaceable and will be deeply missed."
