C3 Team Member Will Compete at National Model United Nations New York Conference

By Stephanie Wejbe, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

C3 Team Member, Robert Bastone, will be among 12 students representing UCR’s Model United Nations (UCRMUN) to compete at this year’s National Model United Nations conference, which will be held in New York on April 6th-10th. The conference will feature debates on various international issues by students worldwide. Participants are assigned countries or non-government organizations (NGOs) to represent and conduct a mock session, culminating in debate for some students on the floor of the United Nation’s General Assembly and Economic and Social Council.

UCRMUN, which has been in existence for nearly forty years, is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating students in international policy, relations, and politics, and seeks to accurately simulate the functions of the United Nations. Model United Nations has become an increasingly popular activity for high school and college students throughout the country. Conferences throughout the nation have been held including several in Southern California. At the conferences, students represent delegations from various nation-states and non-governmental organizations in the same setting as the actual United Nations. This past February, UCRMUN hosted its 37th annual high school conference, which was attended by over 400 students from13 high schools.

Bastone who is looking forward to the national conference hopes to contribute a “winning attitude” to the competition. He will be representing the non-governmental organization CARE, a development and humanitarian organization the Committee on the Exercise of the Unalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. The twelve UCR students will be placed into six committees, in which two students serve.

Bastone, third year Political Science/Law and Society major, recently joined the award-winning CHASS College Computing team as a News Writer intern. He joined UCRMUN last June and currently serves as Fundraising Director. Recently, he was elected as Assistant-Secretary General of UCRMUN, for the 2004-2005 academic year. Robert is also Vice-President of Member Development for the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity Chapter at UCR, and volunteers in his spare time.

Robert views being chosen as one of the twelve students to attend the New York Conference as a “big honor.” He was chosen along with his fellow committee members based on his experience and service. At the upcoming conference, “I expect a high level of competition similar to what we have experienced at previous conferences,” Bastone commented. In addition, Bastone believes that UCRMUN will fare well in the competition.
