The Department of Music at the University of California, Riverside, presents a special family concert, A Musical Menagerie:  Animals and Other Creatures, presented by the UCR Orchestra, conducted by Ruth Charloff.  The musical parade of creatures includes Mancini's Pink Panther, an excerpt from Stravinsky's Firebird, Saint-Saens's famous cello solo The Swan (performed by UCR's principal cellist Jennifer Yang), and E.T., one of John Williams' most celebrated film scores.  The orchestra will also play Gwyneth Walker's Fanfare for the Family Farm (which features milking cans and pails among its percussion instruments), Lucien Cailliet's comical Variations on "Pop Goes the Weasel", and the world premiere of Howl and Hunt by UCR composer Tim Labor.

The centerpiece will be Prokofiev's classic children's tale Peter and the Wolf, narrated by the acclaimed storyteller Karen Wilson.  Ms. Wilson is a performer with wide appeal, who has enthralled children, teenagers and adults alike with her teaching and performance of stories from African and African-American traditions.  She has performed in such diverse settings as New York City's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and its Central Park Zoo; Clearwater's Hudson River Revival; The Harlem School of the Arts; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Museum of Fine Arts in Ponce, Puerto Rico.  She has traveled and performed with Pete Seeger, and her performance of Paul Laurence Dunbar's "The Party" was broadcast on PBS as part of the "Favorite Poem Project."

The concert will be held at the University Theatre on the UCR Campus.  Special ticket pricing for this family event is $7 general, $6 student/senior, and $4 children 12 and under.
