As part of University of California’s efforts to support undergraduate research, UCR is currently providing research grants for undergraduates. The Office of Instructional Development has been offering mini-grants up to $400 every quarter to awarded applicant s. Students who submit proposals by January 7, 2005 will be eligible for grants Winter Quarter 2005. The Office of Instructional Development has recently awarded grants for this fall term.

One of the grants was awarded to Senior music major Kristin Tucker to support work on her senior thesis through the Honors Program.  Kristin’s thesis is titled “Lucid Voices and Blurry Lines: An Exploration of Sound and Music in Islam” and is focused on Muslim conceptions of sound and its realization through Qur’anic recitation and ecstatic song traditions like qawwali. Her thesis will draw together library research with ethnographic work in several mosques in Southern California .  Her thesis advisers are Deborah Wong (Music) and Michael Feener (Religious Studies).  Kristin writes, “I feel that a better understanding of Islam in the West is vital for increasing cultural tolerance and communication, especially in light of the current world situation.”

The University maintains a website with current opportunities for undergraduate research, but independent research is also highly encouraged. Listings on the site are cataloged by department, and other assistance is also offered. Students are encouraged to visit the undergraduate research site and to discuss opportunities with faculty.

The Music department currently offers Bachelor degree programs in Music and Music and Culture, and a Masters of Arts degree program in Music. Several grants and awards for excellence in music are also available.

For information about programs and research opportunities in the Music Department please visit the Music Department website.
