UCR Congratulates Dean Patricia O'Brien

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of UCR’s faculty, students, and staff, I wish to congratulate Dean Patricia O’Brien on being named Executive Dean of the UCLA College. This high-level administrative appointment at a world-renowned campus acknowledges Dean O’Brien’s outstanding leadership and long service to higher education.

Pat has led UCR’s College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences for nearly five years, with vision and great judgment, which is apparent in the quality of the faculty hired and the ambitious programs launched during her tenure. We are deeply appreciative of Pat’s close collaboration with UCR’s other college deans, which enabled the development of new inter-disciplinary programs such as the digital media initiative and the Center for Sustainable Suburban Development. She enhanced existing distinguished programs, including the Center for Ideas and Society and the Gluck Fellows program. Under her leadership new initiatives in her college, like the Center for California Native Nations and a program in Southeast Asian Studies, were developed.

Pat has been an outstanding spokesperson for arts, culture, and the humanities, with a special gift for inspiring her colleagues and the public. She has worked closely with the Riverside arts community and other local institutions of higher education to promote national recognition for Riverside as the center of arts and culture in the Inland Empire. With her support UCR’s nationally recognized California Museum of Photography and Sweeney Art Gallery have prospered and UCR’s new Culver Center for the Arts has been started with a generous gift from Frances and Tony Culver.

Pat will be deeply missed by her UCR family. We thank her for her warm and vivacious spirit and her friendship, and wish her well in her new endeavor. We look forward to continuing to work with her as a UC colleague.
