Professor Patricia Morton of the Art History Department has been named Faculty Director of the Barbara and Art Culver Center, an interactive arts center and educational facility that will be located in downtown Riverside. The Culver Center will support a variety of cultural events open to the public as well as classes for UCR students..

Morton was named Director of the Culver Center by Interim Dean Joel Martin, who commented that “she is the perfect person for this new position.” He added that “she combines a deep knowledge of art with professional experience as an architect.”

The Culver center will be located in the historic Rouse Building in downtown Riverside. Funding for the project is being provided through a combination of state funding, local support and private resources, including a donation from Frances and the late Tony Culver of five million dollars.

The entire project will feature a Downtown Performance Hall, Atrium, Sculpture Garden, Film/Video Viewing Room, Media Computer Studio, Display Case Gallery, Dance studios, Art Studios. The emphasis of the center will be on digital arts and innovative uses for technology, and will hopefully enhance the presence of UCR in downtown Riverside, as well as increase the visibility of the arts in the community.

Morton will oversee the development of the center and its programs into the coming years and will utilize much of her previous experience.

Professor Morton is an architect and historian, as well as Chair of the Art History Department. She received her B.A. in Architecture from Yale, M.A. in Architecture from Columbia, and a Ph.D in Architectural history from Princeton.
