Joel Martin Appointed as Interim Dean

Dear Campus Community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Joel Martin as Interim Dean of UCR's College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. The appointment follows an extensive consultative process to fill the vacancy created by Dean Patricia O'Brien, recently appointed to the position of Executive Dean of UCLA's College of Letters and Science. Dr. Martin's appointment is effective immediately. A search for the permanent CHASS Dean will commence next Fall, under the leadership of Executive Vice Chancellor Ellen Wartella.

Dr. Martin is Chair of UCR's Department of Religious Studies and holds appointments in both the Religious Studies and History departments. He also holds the first permanent Costo Professorship in American Indian Affairs. In this position he has fostered connections between UCR and Native American nations. Dr. Martin also serves as director-designate of the Center for California Native Nations, and the Chair of the Search Advisory Committee for the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement.

Joel Martin received his PhD in the History of Religions in 1988 from Duke University. He also holds degrees from Birmingham-Southern College (B.A.) and Harvard University (M.T.S). He has received a NEH Fellowship for College and University Professors (1995) and his book Sacred Revolt: The Muskogees' Struggle for a New World (Beacon, 1991) was named an Outstanding Book on the Subject of Human Rights in the U.S. Additional publications include Screening the Sacred: Religion, Mythology and Ideology in Popular American Film (Westview, 1995) and The Land Looks After Us: A History of Native American Religion (Oxford, 2001).

Please join me in wishing Dr. Joel Martin success in his role as interim Dean of CHASS.
