By Catherine Szilagyi, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Dr. Peter Burke

A banquet was held January 28 th at UC Riverside’s Commons Cafeteria to recognize some of UCR’s most distinguished alumni. Assistant Vice Chancellor in the Office of Alumni and Constituent Relations Kyle D. Hoffman presented a welcome address after the Scottish bagpipes opened the ceremony.

The first recognitions presented were in honor of eight UCR scholars named AAAS fellows for the 2004 year. Among the eight scholars named last fall, two of those were Professors of CHASS’ Sociology Department, Peter Burke and Scott Coltrane.

Dr. Scott Coltrane

Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology Peter Burke was recognized for pioneering theoretical and empirical work on self and identity processes as they influence human behavior and social interaction. Likewise, Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean Scott Coltrane was recognized for significant contributions to understanding of the social construction of gender, the dynamics of parent-child relationships, and the role of fathers in the family.

These two Professors of Sociology will be joining more than 120 UCR scientists and social scientists who have earned this designation, because of their superb scholarly and research achievements.

AAAS is the world’s largest alliance of scientists, founded in 1848. Every year, new members that have made distinguished efforts towards advancement in the sciences and social sciences are elected to join. Election as a Fellow of AAAS is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers; the organization currently has nearly 140,000 members and 272 affiliated societies around the world.
