The Center for Iberian and Latin American Music Launches Encuentros/Encounters 2005

By Kathryn Webber, Graduate Student Editor

The recently established Center for Iberian and Latin American Music (CILAM) is sponsoring Encuentros/Encounters, a performance and an interdisciplinary conference instituted to encourage the research and performance of music in the Iberian and Latin American traditions.

This year’s program focuses on pianist and composer, Enrique Granados as well as the artist Francisco Goya. The conference takes a dual approach, investigating Goya’s interaction with the music of his time and the subsequent influence of Goya’s work on Granados.

“Love and Death,” a performance of Enrique Granados’ music influenced by the art of Francisco Goya, will take place on Thursday, February 24 at 8 PM in the Performance Lab, ARTS 166 on the UC Riverside campus. Distinguished pianist, Douglas Riva, well-known for his performances of Granados’ music, and Susan Roe, acclaimed soprano, will perform together at this event.

The one-day conference will take place on Friday, February 25, beginning at 9 AM, in the Performance Lab, ARTS 166. Topics include “Dances in the 18 th-century Spanish Keyboard Music,” accompanied by a musical and dance performance by the speakers, Luisa Morales and Cristóbal Salvador, and “Inventing Goya: Biography, Film and Opera,” by Joseph Jones.

The Center for Iberian and Latin American Music is sponsoring Encuentros/Encounters with the assistance of, among others, the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. In the future, Encuentros/Encounters will feature a wide variety of topics such as music and politics in the Central Andes (2006), mariachi in Mexican culture and politics (2007), music of the Philippines in celebration of 110 years of independence (2008), and contemporary music in Brazil (2009).
