UCR Museum Design Honored

By Robert Bastone, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

The University of California, Riverside California Museum of Photography (CMP) has been honored by the American Association of Museums (AAM) with an award in the Publications Design competition.

The Museum received Second Prize in the “Invitation to Events” Category for institutions with budgets of $500,000 or less. The award was presented to honor the design of the invitation to an event titled “Revolution and Commerce: The Legacy of Korda’s Portrait of Che Guevara.”

The Publications Design Competition “acknowledges excellence in the graphic design of museum publications” and is the only nationally judged event involving works done by all types of museums.

This year, the 25th year of the competition, drew more than 900 entries from various museums located worldwide. Over 130 museum publications were selected as winners in various categories during competition this year. Of the award recipients selected, 24 received a first prize, 20 received a second prize, and 86 received an honorable mention recognition.

The UCR California Museum of Photography has entered the AAM Publications Design Competition in past years, where it has been honored with several national awards. This year’s piece was jointly designed by CMP director Professor Jonathan Green and graphic designer Wendy Brown.   Green commented that the team was “very pleased with the concept of the design.” While describing the design, he added that the “the unfolding nature of the piece captured the essence of the use of this single image as it transcended boundaries of media and utilization .” Green was also “pleased to see that other museum professionals and graphic designers also thought the concept and the realization was strong.”

Professor Green reiterated the museum’s commitment to designing artistically relevant and “engaging designs” in their publications, in order to “both reflect the sophistication and impact of the work we present and to engage the public.” Green added that the museum has had to reprint this piece “in order to allow people to purchase it at the museum store because it has been in high demand.”

The invitation to “ Revolution and Commerce: The Legacy of Korda’s Portrait of Che Guevara” will be featured in the upcoming summer issue of Museum News, and will also be on display at the AAM Annual Meeting, which will be held from May 1-5, 2005 in Indianapolis.
