In Memory of Dr. Bill Bradshaw

By Briana Van Havermaat, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

The community was recently informed of the passing of Professor Emeritus William Bradshaw.  He died in his sleep at his home in Riverside on September 15th.

Most people would say Professor Bradshaw was a quiet man, beaming with gentle, good humor. However, if you knew him well, you understood his more complex personality and his unimaginable passion for art; passion not just for his own art, but rather the art in everything.

Dr. Bradshaw was born in El Paso, Texas on March 5, 1928. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles where he received his B.A. in 1950 and then his M.A. in 1952. In 1957, Professor Bradshaw came to UCR as an instructor in art. He also became a founding member of the UCR Department of Art.

Professor Bradshaw taught his students with restrained, informed passion. Regardless of what was happening politically on campus, the most important thing to him was teaching his students. Edward Beardsley, a colleague of Professor Bradshaw’s in the late 60’s, described his relationship with the students, “He loved them, kept them focused, encouraged their interest, and helped them in times of need. He got to know them, allowed them to know him, and in that knowing, imparted his love for life and art.”

Teaching was something Professor Bradshaw put his all into everyday, and because of this he enriched the lives of others. Beardsley explained, “That’s where you will find Bill’s most important contribution… in those many heads and hearts that passed through his studio in the course of their education.”

With his generosity and candor, Professor Bradshaw served and benefited UCR for several years, and so will be missed deeply.

Professor Bradshaw is survived by his sons Tomaso Bradshaw of Venice, California; Bryant Bradshaw of Jersey City, New Jersey; Keenan Bradshaw of Santa Monica, California; and his sisters Betty Jane Knight of Santa Maria, California and Mary Ann Bradshaw of Oakland, California.
