New Course Available Winter Quarter 2006

By Briana Van Havermaat, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

CHASS combines many disciplines and provides a fertile environment conducive to innovative research projects and original programs. This multi-disciplinary structure also provides an unmatched opportunity for students’ college education. The College is now offering a new course, HASS 010 “Arts and Ideas Experience.” This isn’t your typical class composed of lectures and weekly discussions. Instead, this course introduces students to several different performances, sponsored lectures, and visual arts on the UC Riverside campus.

The two-credit course encourages students to visit art exhibits at the Sweeney Art Gallery, attend concerts sponsored by the Music Department and dance performances sponsored by the Dance Department, watch plays sponsored by the Theatre Department, listen to visiting lecturers, and participate in several other UC Riverside officially (non-student) sponsored events. After attending the event, students are required to write up a one-page analysis.

Students meet with their instructor three times during the quarter. The first meeting discusses the basics of the course; how to find events and write the reviews. The other two meetings are at the middle and end of the quarter where students discuss experiences they encountered at the different events.

This course allows students to extend their education from the classroom to live performances on campus. This also provides for creative interactions with other students. In addition, students get to pick and choose the ten events they want to attend, allowing them to focus more on their own interests.
