 Georgia Warnke

Georgia Warnke, Professor and Chair of the Philosophy Department, has recently been appointed to the position of Associate Dean for Academic Personnel at the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Interim Dean Joel Martin announced the appointment at the first meeting with chairs and directors of the College, September 20, 2005.

Warnke has also just recently returned to UC Riverside this summer after spending the 2004-2005 academic year at the National Humanities Center as a Fellow, where she was working on issues of race and gender identity for her manuscript entitled, “After Sex: A Hermeneutics of Identity.” The National Humanities Center is a privately incorporated institution for advanced study in the humanities disciplines. Although Warnke has also done work on social, contemporary German, and feminist philosophy, her primary studies tend to focus on moral and political philosophy.

“I’m thrilled that Professor Warnke will bring her experience as the Chair of the Committee on Academic Promotion to the College as the new Associate Dean for Academic Personnel,” said Interim Dean Joel Martin of CHASS, “But I’m even happier that she is joining us fresh from her stint as a Fellow at the National Humanities Center.”

As Associate Dean, Warnke will facilitate discussions on the value of liberal arts education for the twenty-first century. With her help, the College hopes to “theorize creatively, innovate pedagogically, and demonstrate practically” what the liberal arts can and should become in these times.

“Georgia will help this lead this initiative, and it could not be more timely,” said Interim Dean Joel Martin, “We've just advertised for a First Year Coordinator so we will soon have a great team in place to initiate some new undergraduate programs working closely with Associate Dean David Fairris. We are determined to improve our students’ transition to College, their success while here, and their placement afterwards.”

Warnke has published three books, "Gadamer: Hermeneutics, Tradition and Reason," with Stanford University Press, "Justice and Interpretation" with M.I.T. Press and "Legitimate Differences" with the University of California Press. More information about Georgia Warnke.
