By Karen Wong, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Alumni couple Ann and Evan Maxwell are recipients of this year’s Alumni Awards of Distinction, and will be honored at an awards ceremony held at the University on May 6. Receiving the Honored Alumni Award for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, the Maxwells are among a list of only seven alumni to be recognized. Ann graduated from UCR in 1966 with a B.A. in English and Evan graduated in 1965 with a B.A. in Political Science. The two have distinguished themselves, both as a duo and individually, through a number of accomplishments over the years.

Ann and Evan’s collaboration achievements include publishing nine award-winning mystery novels under the pen name of “A.E. Maxwell,” a non-fiction work, The Year-Long Day, that was condensed in Reader’s Digest and printed internationally, and four suspense novels that have appeared on nation-wide bestseller lists. In addition, they created the movie novelization of the 1992 Val Kilmer film, Thunderheart.

Individually, Ann has been highly successful as a romance novelist, publishing 30 romance novels that have made the New York Times’s book list. She has also written nine science fiction novels, seven of which have been recommended for a Nebula Award. Ann received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Romance Writers of America in 1994.

Evan has worked for 20 years as an esteemed news writer for the Los Angeles Times, covering international crime stories. After his retirement, he continued his journalism career as a freelance news writer. However, he focused his work mostly on writing fiction. His book, All the Winters That Have Been, was made into a movie in 1997.

Both Ann and Evan continue to collaborate on projects along with working individually on other pieces of literature.
