Faculty Member Theda Shapiro Honored with Distinguished Campus Service Award

By Karen Wong, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Associate Professor
Theda Shapiro

Associate Professor of French and Italian Theda Shapiro was recently named one of the two recipients for the 2006 Distinguished Campus Service Award.

A UCR faculty member since 1969, Shapiro has worked as a professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages and has twice served as the chair of the department. She has also served as director of programs in Italian and French since 1999. Throughout the years, Shapiro has extensively worked with the Education Abroad Program (EAP) and the University of California Consortium on Language Learning and Teaching (UCCLLT). Seeing herself as a facilitator who tries to help both students and colleagues to discover possibilities for learning, researching, and careers, Shapiro aims to open the world to students and help them to find out that there is a universe of people and things out there. She believes that the exchanges through studying abroad helps students develop tolerance, maturity, poise, self-esteem, and humbleness, stating, “I think the most educational thing both individual students and UCR can do is to internationalize ourselves as much as we can.”

Shapiro is motivated through her work by the fact that she is able to help provide a multifaceted education to the university’s students and to consequently, be a part of their growth experience. Her future goals for UCR are for the university to continue to create quality educational opportunities for students, to serve the community in useful ways, and “to be a window on the world for our local citizenry.”

Shapiro will chair the Academic Senate Committee on Preparatory Education during the coming year and also help with the development of the new campus-wide Writing Program. She will be teaching the lower-division courses of World Literature by Women and World Literature of Ancient and Medieval Times in Fall 2006.
