Culver Center: Status Update

Culver Center: Status Update
By Karen Wong, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Construction of the Barbara and Art Culver Center of the Arts, scheduled to open during the 2008-2009 school year, will begin next spring. The removal of the Wurms Building, a building connected to the historical Rouse Building in downtown Riverside where the center will be built, is anticipated to take place this summer.

The program and schematic design stages of the center have been recently completed. Several committees, composed of faculty, staff, and administrators, have been at work over the past several months with the planning and development of Culver Center. The Building Committee has been working with architects on the programming of the building and reviewing the schematic designs. Procedures to insure that activities in the Culver Center are well integrated into the academic program of the various arts departments are being undertaken by the Academic Plan Committee. A business plan for the entire downtown arts complex has been submitted by the Business Plan Committee to Interim Dean Martin for his review and implementation. The plan outlines the budget and staffing requirements of the complex along with the opportunities and benefits to the university that this project will provide. Furthermore, the Arts Events Committee is developing a program of arts events and activities at the UCR/California Museum of Photography, the Sweeney Art Gallery and the adjacent mall to acquaint the public with the types of events they can anticipate when the Culver Center opens.

On November 4, guests will be invited to a gala and dinner that will provide them with the opportunity to see the Culver Center in its “before” state, and exhibits in both the UCR/California Museum of Photography and the Sweeney Gallery. The creative work of the university’s Gluck Fellows will also be showcased.
