History Professor Receives Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowship

Lucille Chia, Associate Professor of History, has been awarded a Frederick Burhkhardt Residential Fellowship for Recently Tenured Scholars by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). The ACLS awards up to eleven Burkhardt scholars annually, who receive $75,000 as well as a year’s residency at a participating national research center.

Professor Chia’s project, “Impact on Fujian of Trade with and Migration to the Philippines (16th-18th centuries),” examines how coastal Fujian in southeast China was affected by trade and migration to the Philippines. Prof. Chia has spent two years collecting research materials in Spain, China, and the United States, and plans to use her residence period to analyze her data. She plans to publish several journal articles and eventually a comprehensive book-length study.

Professor Chia will spend her year of residence at the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton where she will have the opportunity to work with scholars from the institute as well as scholars from Princeton, Columbia, and the University of Pennsylvania.
