The Sweeney Art Gallery Has a New Home

By Briana Van Havermaat, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

The Sweeney Art Gallery has been a part of the UCR campus for twenty-eight years but now it has a new location, new neighbors and a broader audience. When it re-opens this spring it will be in the heart of downtown Riverside’s popular pedestrian mall, on the first floor of the historic Walling building at 3800 Main Street.

UCR chose the internationally recognized architect Peter Zellner, in association with Ontario based firm HMC Architects, to transform the historic building into a modern gallery space that would be a first-class showcase for contemporary art.

Zellner believes that the movement of the Sweeney Gallery to downtown Riverside is a unique opportunity to experiment with the role of arts institutions in the future of urban redevelopment efforts. He also believes it is the ideal setting in a growing region, and imagines the Sweeney as a model for incorporating an adaptable, vibrant contemporary arts facility within an important historical and social setting.

The first show in the new gallery takes place April 1 st and will premiere “People for a Better Tomorrow.” The guest curator is Meg Cranston. This showcase focuses on artists using experimental strategies to explore the optimistic potential of transgression. The gallery premiere and opening reception will be from 6-9 PM.

UCR Sweeney Art Gallery is located at 3800 Main Street at the corner of University Avenue, on the Downtown Pedestrian Mall in Riverside, California. The gallery is open to the public from Tuesday through Saturday, 12 to 5 PM. Admission is free. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
