UCR Alumni Goes to Washington D.C. to Present Paper

By Briana Van Havermaat, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Raymond Collings who earned his PhD in psychology at UCR in 2001 is now on the faculty at State University of New York, Cortland. He co-authored a literature review about cognitive impairments due to space travel with Anthony Nelson. The project was done for fun, by the two, last summer. The paper was presented at the Eastern Psychological Association meeting in March.

Leslie Eaton, an assistant Professor of Psychology at State University of New York, Cortland thought the paper was really good and convinced Collings and Nelson to enter it into a nationwide completion sponsored by the Council on Undergraduate Research called “Posters on the Hill.”

Collings and Nelson soon discovered that they were among only 60 posters that were selected. On April 25, 2006 they presented their research on Capitol Hill to the US Congress in the poster session. Apart from the poster session they also held private meetings with the New York State congress people: Senators Schumer and Clinton, and Representative Boehlert, and their staff members. Collings and Nelson talked to them about the importance of supporting (financially through NSF, NIGH, etc.) undergraduate research opportunities and outside of classroom research experiences.
