Chair of Art Department Gives Building an Extreme Makeover

By Pauline Moc, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Jim IsermannJim Isermann, Chairman of the Art Department at UCR, worked alongside Carlson & Co. to complete the renovation of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Customer Center. Originally, the Center’s stucco structure was difficult to spot, but Isermann’s renovations made the building stand out. As previously reported in the Los Angeles Times on Sunday, October 8, “Isermann wrapped the Metro building with 500 panels of folded aluminum sunscreens, coated in three shades of blue and set against a new paint job of avocado-ish ‘GI green.’ Attached from the roof to a height 8 feet above the ground, the panels are oriented to create the illusion of three-dimensional cubes skimming the building’s exterior.”

Isermann received his MFA from the California Institute of Arts in 1980 and juggles his time creating works for exhibitions and designing projects like his recent renovation of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Customer Center. Isermann has experimented with various styles of art; however, he is best known for his bold designs and colors.
