The UCR Department of Dance is pleased to announce that Ahalya Satkunaratnam, A.B.D. in Dance History and Theory, is a recipient of two awards from the U.S. Department of Education 2006-2007:  Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Award for her research on Bharata Natyam dance practices in Sri Lanka, which examines the intersection of war, identity and cultural production. She best represents UCR's Department of Dance which has one of the most prestigious Ph.D. programs in the country and is recognized internationally.

Born in Malaysia and raised in Canada and the United States, Ahalya Satkunaratnam was introduced formally to the dance practice, Bharata Natyam, by Chicago-based teacher and choreographer, Hema Rajagopalan.  From 1995 to 2003, Satkunaratnam was a dancer for Rajagopalan√≠s touring company, Natya Dance Theatre. She received her bachelor√≠s degree in Political Science from Loyola University Chicago. Prior to her current academic work, she served as Art Education Director at Insight Arts, an arts organization in Chicago. There, she produced community-based theatre and performance projects that focused on social justice and human rights. She has choreographed dance works for several innovating performance artists, including karen g. williams. She is co-founder, choreographer and dancer of Jaggery an eclectic San Francisco dance duo with Bhangra and West African dancer, Joti Singh.

Ahalya Satkunaratnam is working with Prof. Priya Srinivasan in the Department of Dance and has recently advanced to candidacy. The department wishes her every success for her fieldwork in Sri Lanka, and future studies at UCR.
