The UCR Chamber Orchestra from the University of California, Riverside, will perform music by Stravinsky, Weill, Bloch, Bartòk, Gershwin and Glazunov on its upcoming program, Sunday, May 6 at 7:00pm. Participating in a college-wide focus on immigration by the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, the Chamber Orchestra program celebrates the brilliant generation of European composers who left Europe and found a new home in the United States during the upheavals of first half of the twentieth century. The styles range from Stravinsky's buoyant, spiky neo-classicism in his Suite No. 1 (1925) and Bartòk’s rich folk-music explorations in his Romanian Folk Dances (1917) to the emotional spirituality of Ernest Bloch's Concerto Grosso No. 1 (1925) and the biting, cabaret wit of Kurt Weill's Little Threepenny Music (1928). The Lullaby for strings by George Gershwin (himself the child of immigrants) hints at the tremendous impact on America's popular music this wave of migration would have. Also featured on the program is alto saxophonist Jonathan Guffey, joining the orchestra for the 1934 Saxophone Concerto by Russian composer Alexander Glazunov, a virtuosic favorite heard here with its original string-orchestra accompaniment. Ruth Charloff conducts the program.
