The Last Five Years, a Musical

By Anthony D. Sciarretta, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

This February, the UCR department of theatre proudly presented the critically acclaimed work, The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown.  The Musical was performed February 9-10 in the UCR Theatre Lab.

The Last Five Years has been described as a “heart-warming” musical story depicting the “joys and trials of life and love.”  The musical chronicled Jaime and Cathy through the beginning and conclusion of their relationship.  The only twist came when the story was told from two different perspectives by each character; one from the beginning, the other from the end.  Only in the middle of the performance did Jaime and Cathy come together in matrimony.

A musical of love and loss was not at all a new concept; however Brown’s fresh score seems to reinvent the story.  Brown has been recognized as one of “Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters.”  He has also been awarded with several honors including Time Magazines 10 Best of 2001 and in 1999 he won a Tony Award for his score in Parade
