Former UCR Student Awarded Baumgardt Memorial Fellowship

By Pauline Moc, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Glen Pettigrove, a UCR alumnus, was awarded the Baumgardt Memorial Fellowship by the American Philosophical Association (APA) for his research on forgiveness and ethics.

The APA established the Fellowship, in 1975, in memory of the late David Baumgardt. This honor is awarded every five years to individuals whose research mirrors Baumgardt’s interests in comparing morality related with cultural and religious traditions or constrasting ideologies like power and forgiveness.

Because of his accomplishment, Pettigrove was awarded $5000 and the opportunity to deliver three lectures on forgiveness at Arizona State University during the 2007-08 academic year.

Pettigrove recevied a B.A. from the University of Michigan, a M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a M.A. and Ph.D. from UC Riverside. For two years, he taught at Santa Clara University before moving to Palmerston North, New Zealand where he teaches Philosophy at Massey University. His articles have been published in a number of leading journals: Utilitas, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, American Philosophical Quarterly, Pacific Philosophical Quarterly, The Journal of Social Philosophy, and The Southern Journal of Philosophy.
