Merit Scholarships Opportunities from the Department of Religious Studies

By My Nguyen, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Each year the Religious Studies Department honors students of merit with scholarship opportunities.  This year, eight outstanding students were receiving a $200-500 scholarship.   With this award money the Religious Studies Department hopes to encourage students in their upcoming research and learning experiences at the university.  Awards are determined by the department faculty in late spring of each year and made possible through donations sent to the Religious Studies Fund of the UC Riverside Foundation by Community Friends of Religious Studies, Alumni/ae, Faculty, and Staff.

The Religious Studies Encouragement Award of $300 was given to Luis Correa, a student who has shown promise and potential in the study of religion since his arrival at UCR. His achievements have been praised by the Religious Studies Department faculty.

The Barbara and Donald Donner Essay Award of $300 was awarded to Shady Oliver this year.  This award is in recognition of undergraduate research and writing in the academic study of religion.

The Religious Studies Achievement Award of $500 was given to Hannah Postiff, a UCR Religious Studies student, who has demonstrated meritorious achievement.  To qualify for this scholarship, the student must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, have demonstrated progress in the goals of the department such as disciplined attention to the facts, critical and creative reflection, analysis and interpretation, and clear communication orally and in writing. The student must also show a meritorious level of work with a faculty member of the department.

The Edwin S. Gaustad Award of $500 was awarded to Rachel Meeker.  This award is in honor of Edwin S. Gaustad's numerous outstanding contributions to the study of religion.  Awarded to a UCR Religious Studies graduating senior or a recent graduate who has demonstrated an interest in pursuing graduate studies in religion, the recipient must have a consistent 3.5 GPA or higher, demonstrate progress in the goals of the department, and must have obtained a meritorious level of work with a faculty member of the department.

Kevin Eldridge was awarded the $300 scholarship.  The award is given to encourage, recognize, and maintain excellence in Religious and/or Theological Studies within baccalaureate and post-baccalaureate degree programs.
