By Elizabeth Romero Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Paulo C. Chagas, assistant professor of Music, will be heading to Brazil to attend the 9th International Theatre Festival of Belo Horizonte to present his piece Corpo, Carne e Esprito (Body, Flesh and Spirit). International Theatre Festival of Belo Horizonte is the largest event since the Festival's foundating in 1994, and is promoted by the City Hall of Belo Horizonte and Artistic Education Foundation (FLAMA). The festival is sponsored by Petrobras, CEMIG, OI, USIMINAS, and the cultural support of Funarte, Casa do Conde, Oi Futuro, Usicultura, and Federal and State of Minas Gerais agencies to stimulate culture.

The festival will begin June 26th and end July 6th, during which 34 performances will take place. Eighteen will be held on a performance stage, while nine will be held on in alternative spaces. Seven will be performing on the street, including a group that will meander throughout the town. Seventeen international groups will present, along with six Brazilian groups, and nine groups from Belo Horizonte.

Chagas will be one of the international participants, where he will take part in the music festivities with Johannes Birringer (digital choreography), with music ensembles, vocalists, and a triptych of film projections along with animations that have been influenced by the painting of Francis Bacon.

The music for the visual-audio work was inspired by Bacon's work, which feature soprano, counter-tenor, and baritone singers, string quartet, percussion and electronic sound that will run parallel with Birringer's visual and performance environment. Chagas will conduct the music group, while Birringer will conduct the displays of the projections. Chagas and Birringer will also be conducting workshops in the areas of music composition and digital performance.
