MFA Students' Publications

By My Nguyen, Student Intern of Chass Computing College

Two MFA students from last year, Mary Copeland and Gabriela Jauregui, have poetry books forthcoming this year.

A graduate from UCR with an MFA in Creative Writing with an emphasis in poetry, Mary Copeland's new book Clocks We Watch, has been accepted by Plainview Press and is to be published early summer of 2008.

"In a language and syntax of stunning grace, vitality, nuance, and evocative power, Copeland as mother, daughter, lover, and acute observer of the human dilemma takes us where the best poetry should to the heart of the mystery of our own being," said B.H. Fairchild for the book jacket blurbs.

Copeland is currently teaching English Composition at both Riverside Community College and San Bernardino Valley College, and looks forward to an upcoming book signing at UCR.

Gabriela Jauregui is currently doing a residency in Munich for two months.  Her first book of poetry is due for publication in June.  The title is Controlled Decay and it will be published by Black Goat Press/Akashic Books.
"Controlled Decay, Jauregui's poetry collection, is animated by a rich sense of language's polyglot permeability, which she uses to explore the interpenetration of manifold cultural spaces, from the sublime to the grotesque. Beautiful and wounding moments manifest in her unique lyrical and political engagement with the world," said Jauregui's publisher.

Jauregui was born and raised in Mexico City, and has works published in magazines, journals, and anthologies in Mexico, the United States, and Europe.
