Susan Straight Nominated for Edgar Award

By My Nguyen, Student Intern of CHASS College Computing

Creative Writing Professor Susan Straight's short story, The Golden Gopher, from this past year's Los Angeles Noir collection (Akashic Books), is a 2008 Edgar nominee for Best Short Story.

Written with lyricism and an eye for detail, The Golden Gopher is a story told through the eyes of Fantine, a travel journalist whose past is coming back to haunt her through the news of her best friends death.  The story takes place in L.A. where the homeless and the restless walk and commune together on the streets, and as Fantine moves through the landscape of crack addicts and lost souls, we discover through her world that nothing is as it seems.

Straight has published six novels and numerous works of short fiction, essays and articles, and has won many national awards.  Her novel Highwire Moon, published in 2001, was optioned for film by Little Monument Pictures and is currently in development.  Her commentaries are frequently heard on National Public Radio's All Things Considered.

The Edgar Award is presented by Mystery Writers of America.  MWA is the premier organization for mystery writers, professionals allied to the crime writing field, aspiring crime writers, and those who are devoted to the genre. MWA also provides scholarships for writers, sponsors MWA: Reads (their youth literacy program, formerly known as Kids Love A Mystery), and sponsors symposia and conferences as well as conducting other activities to further a better appreciation and higher regard for crime writing.
